Value clothing retailing: Trend or revolution?
This week it was announced that half year sales for UK discount retailer Primark are up 36% on the previous year. But it's not the usual celebrity endorsements or expensive advertising campaigns behind this impressive growth - consumers just can't get enough of the value-for-money fashion on offer! This was evident by the mayhem caused when the chain opened it's new Oxford Street store in London recently.
With more retailers following in the footsteps of the likes of Primark and Asda - supermarket chain Tesco is expanding it's budget clothing and even Marks & Spencer is driving prices down - can this phenomenon last?
Possibly not. In Asia, where the majority of these garments are produced, there are signs that prices are edging up. Also, rather ironically, some retail experts believe that the current demand in the UK for cut-price clothing is just another trend which will itself go out of fashion.
