Featured research: “The Source” garment sourcing newsletter

This month, we’re featuring Clothesource’s “The Source” - a monthly garment sourcing newsletter available by subscription from just-style.

The Source is the world’s only investigative review entirely dedicated to sourcing apparel. Every month, Clothesource’s editorial team dissects events in the hundred and more countries around the world that export clothing and textiles to rich countries. They then extract and analyse key information and data to influence how buyers buy and how factories sell.

Readers of The Source can be modifying their sourcing strategies, or their strategies for reaching apparel buyers, while their slower competitors are still losing money by following last year’s fad.

Often, the team uncovers trends months or years before other commentators catch up. For example, they predicted the re-imposition of quotas in 2005 while buyers were still ordering garments from China that proved undeliverable. The Source was the first to predict the surprising resilience of garment making in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Cambodia in 2006 and 2007 and they predicted in mid-2006 that China was going to get a great deal more expensive by the end of 2007 - and was the first publication in the world to draw attention to the resurgence of China’s share of global apparel sales in mid-2008.

Highlights taken from the current, March 2009 edition:

  • The Source has been the first to break the story that US February 2009 apparel imports showed the fastest decline rate since quotas were removed, and that China's garment exports showed their fastest decline this decade.
  • The Source was the first industry magazine to report the March 9 hint from China's Minster of Commerce that he may increase export tax rebates still further
  • It first reported the suspension of operations at ITG's Nicaraguan Cone Denim mill, and the Nicaraguan government's decision to start subsidising its operations just a year after the mill's opening
  • It reported Cambodia's withdrawal of legislation making it easier to put garment workers onto temporary contracts

Whether you are a retailer, a manufacturer, a wholesaler or a student, The Source will keep you up to date with the changes that happen in this fast-moving industry, and will provide you with a unique global perspective.

just-style exclusive offer: Order a two year subscription to The Source by April 30 for the price of eighteen months. Lock in the current depressed state of the British pound - getting what would have cost US$650 three months ago for US$360.
