In the most recent third-quarter filings from US apparel brands and retailers, Abercrombie & Fitch recorded higher earnings thanks to less discounting, while Foot Locker revealed a mixed quarter, and Destination XL narrowed losses. Also, Kate Spade & Co returned to profit, while L Brands, Ross Stores, and Perry Ellis lifted their full-year guidance. TJX Companies booked earnings and sales growth, but Nordstrom, Dick's Sporting Goods and Wal-Mart lowered their full-year outlook. JC Penney narrowed its loss, while Macy's, Urban Outfitters, and The Buckle all posted double-digit earnings declines.

Second-quarter earnings for the retail sector as a whole are forecast to be lower than the prior month, despite easy year-on-year comparisons. The Finish Line posted a small drop in net income, Zumiez saw its profit more than halve, Cherokee Global Brands posted a double-digit decline in net earnings, while Christopher & Banks swung to a loss, and Hudson's Bay was back in the black.
