Macro factors, particularly in the US and Europe, have created a somewhat challenging environment for retailers in 2014. Many succumbed to heavy promotional activity in order to keep sales up. Subsequently, however, margins and earnings were hit. In the most recent third-quarter filings from US apparel brands and retailers, Abercrombie & Fitch recorded higher earnings thanks to less discounting, while Foot Locker and Shoe Carnival revealed mixed quarters, and Caleres saw its profit rise. Also, Citi Trends returned to profit, while L Brands, Ross Stores, and Perry Ellis lifted their full-year guidance.
