Over 1,000 footwear workers yesterday (23 April) went on strike to protest at long working hours and poor working conditions.

The workers are based at the Golden Star Company's factory in Ninh Giang district, Hai Duong province.

Golden Star makes leather shoes and supplies men's casual and fashion footwear for Stella International Holdings.

After the strike, local government officials met with the company to request an improvement in working conditions.

Stella International Holdings supplies many world famous footwear brands, including Clarks, Deckers, Ecco, Rockport, Timberland and Wolverine.

In 2006 and 2007 the company also witnessed large strikes at its plants over similar complaints.
