Up to 1,000 sports shoe workers have staged a noisy protest against US footwear giant Reebok International amid claims a cut in orders has left 5,400 colleagues without work.

Chanting "Reebok are killers" and "Reebok are exploiters", the crowd gathered outside the US Embassy in Jakarta where they set fire to large cardboard replicas of Reebok shoes.

The demonstrators were from a factory in the West Java city of Bandung, owned by PT Primarindo Asia Infrastructure Tbk, one of the firms in Indonesia that produces shoes for Reebok.

Over the past few years, several foreign firms have switched production out of Indonesia due to growing concerns over the social and political situation across the country.
