Athletic apparel giant Adidas-Salomon AG has acquired collegiate and professional league clothing maker Valley Apparel Company for an undisclosed sum.

Valley Apparel, based in Iowa, holds clothing licences for more than 140 colleges and universities and more than 100 professional athletes.

It distributes its products to small- to mid-size retailers including sporting goods stores, department stores, fan shops and college bookstores.

"Although this represents only a minor investment for the group, we are confident that this acquisition is another important step to better control the Adidas brand in the all-important North American market," Adidas America CEO Erich Stamminger said.

Valley Apparel became an Adidas licensee in 1999.
