Animal rights protestors staged a noisy rally against German sports wear giant adidas yesterday over its use of kangaroo leather.

Up to 30 activists held up banners and placards in Brisbane urging shoppers to boycott the company until it stopped its practice of using kangaroo skin for its sports boots.

They also called on Australian athletes such as swimmer Ian Thorpe to ditch their lucrative contracts with the company amid claims millions of "roos" are being slaughtered each year.

In April, adidas-Salomon chief Herbert Hainer defended his company's use of kangaroo leather and said he would not give in to the protestors.
