India's Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) has opened an Apparel Training and Design centre (ATDC) in Adugodi, Bangalore to train unskilled workers within the country's textile industry.

The centre, which opened yesterday (1 January) will provide training in operating sewing machines, finishing and packing as well as quality control.

AEPC chairman Dr A Sakthivel said: "ATDC has the largest Pan-India vocational training network in the apparel sector having 25 ATDC Community Colleges offering 6 months courses, 1 year Diploma and 2 year Advance Diploma programmes and 128 SMART Centres & Skill Camps offering 2-4 months courses covering the major trades like sewing machine operator, finishers and packers, quality checkers, machine technicians, etc. under its banner."

Existing ATDCs in Anekal, Tumkur, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Chinthamani, Ramnagar, Maddur, Hubli & Gadag have helped to train 12,000 garment manufacturing students, according to the AEPC.

The AEPC also revealed plans to open more ATDCs and skill camps in Bellary, Bidar, Gulbarga, Bijapur, Belgaum, Shimoga, Koppal, Davangere, Chitraduga, Hassan, Mangalore, Mallavalli and Mysore.
