US: American Apparel loses business development head
By Leonie Barrie | 27 October 2011
Marty Staff, the head of business development at struggling US manufacturer and retailer American Apparel Inc, is to leave the company after just six months it was revealed yesterday (26 October).
Staff, who is leaving with immediate effect, joined the Los Angeles based firm as its chief business development officer back in March. He helped to win new online and traditional retail business and oversaw the expansion of American Apparel's offerings, especially in accessories.
The company said Staff will remain available to advise during a transition period.
"I believe strongly that this company, with its unique business model, loyal customer base and commitment to American manufacturing, is one of the truly innovative companies in our industry today and is well positioned to succeed going forward," Staff said.
He added: "I look forward to exploring opportunities in fashion and am eager to bring my expertise and insight to bear on new challenges and opportunities in the next phase of my career."
Before joining American Apparel, Staff was president and CEO of JA Apparel Corp, owner of the Joseph Abboud brand. Prior to this he served in senior management at fashion companies including Polo Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, and Calvin Klein.
The retailer, which operates 247 stores, is beginning to show early signs of recovery after battling deepening losses, bankruptcy rumours and funding problems in recent months. Earlier this month, it reported an increase in third-quarter sales, up 5% to US$141m for the three months to 30 September. Comparable sales rose 3% against the same period last year.
