Clothing retailer American Eagle Outfitters Inc said June results were better than expected and has increased its second quarter earnings guidance.

Sales for the five weeks to 3 July 2004 increased 17.6 per cent to $150.8 million, compared to $128.2 million for the same period last year.

Comparable sales for the American Eagle Outfitters stores increased 8.7 per cent in June.

Consolidated comparable store sales, which include American Eagle and Bluenotes/Thriftys stores, increased 7.6 per cent for the month.

Total sales for the quarter to 3 July were up 19.4 per cent to $618.1 million, compared to $517.7 million for the 22 weeks ended 5 July 2003.

The company said it currently expects second quarter earnings to be in the range of $0.30 to $0.32 per share, compared to $0.11 per share in the second quarter of 2003.
