A new piece of legislation designed to boost research in the US textile industry has been welcomed by the American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition (AMTAC).

The bipartisan American Textile Technology Innovation and Research for Exportation Act (ATTIRE) would create a US$5m competitive grant programme at the US Department of Commerce.

University-based and non-profit research institutions would be encouraged to compete for funds in order to boost high-tech textile research and development projects.

“We will be working to encourage other members of Congress to support and co-sponsor this measure,” said AMTAC executive director Auggie Tantillo. “Enactment of this bill is very important to the US textile industry.

“Staying at the forefront of research and development is the lifeblood for maintaining the competitiveness of the US textile industry.”
