Apparel sector leaders are seeking ways to protect the industry from recurrent strikes and protests, urging the government to save the country's economy from the negative impact of shutdowns, generally known as hartals.

The appeal was made at a meeting today (5 March) with Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith - on the third day of three-day countrywide shutdown.

"We want to run our business uninterruptedly. We need to find a solution to stop the strikes and protect our economy," Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), told just-style after the meeting.

Mohiuddin said global ready-made garment buyers have warned that orders may be cancelled if they are not shipped in time.

"Many entrepreneurs are facing discounts, cancellation and deferred payment for failing to make timely shipments. It's a matter of fear the buyers are threatening to cancel orders for delays in delivery."
