US clothing and footwear business C Wonder is to shutter its 100 remaining stores, blaming the "highly competitive" retail environment.

In a statement to just-style, the company said: "Due to the highly competitive nature of the current retail environment, C Wonder will be closing its remaining stores." The group added that it continues to evaluate its "best alternative to maintain the C Wonder experience for its customers".

Media reports have suggested the closures will happen in the next two to three weeks, but C Wonder was not able to confirm this. "There will be no further comment beyond this statement at this time," the retailer noted.

The move comes after reports at the end of last year claimed the struggling retailer was closing 20 of its 32 stores by 1 January.
