Fibre giant Asahi Kasei Corp on Wednesday said it has developed a new sportswear fabric that dries wet garments in 10 minutes compared to the usual 20 minutes.

The fabric features two different types of polyester fibres: one with a W-shaped cross section and the other with a hollow figure-eight cross section which when spun together make a textile that spreads water out more so it evaporates quicker.

Asahi, which expects apparel makers to include the new fabric in time for the Spring/Summer 2004 season, said because the fibres are a different thickness they also absorb water faster due to capillary action.
