British supermarket group Asda, owned by US Wal-Mart Stores Inc, said on Thursday it was to invest £70m in its Scottish stores from January, creating 550 jobs in the process. The money will be spent on expanding home, leisure and fresh food departments as well as adding a new store in Dumbarton, Asda said in a statement.

Asda's existing 33 Scottish stores employ 12,000 people. In total, it has 241 stores in Britain and over 100,000 staff.

Wal-Mart is the world's largest retailer.
