Supermarket chain Asda has announced plans to open Britain's first non-food supermarket on the back of its successful George apparel brand.

The pilot store, to be opened in Walsall in autumn, will sell George clothing, jewellery, toys and homewares.

It will cover 37,500 square feet of retail space and could be developed into a chain if successful.

George is Britain's second biggest clothing retailer behind Marks & Spencer, generating about £1 billion in sales in the UK each year.

Asda currently operates four standalone George outlets across the UK, with a fifth store to be opened in Liverpool next month.
