By | 15 June 2012

Authorities in Burma have responded to a series of strikes last month by setting a basic daily wage of MMK1000 (US$1.25) for garment workers, according to local media reports.

The basic pay, on top of which will be living allowances and performance rewards, were due to take effect from this month. They will be based on a 44-hour working week, with overtime at 22 hours per week.

More than 36,000 workers from about 57 factories, mostly in Yangon, went on strike during May, the reports say. They were calling for a basic monthly wage of at least MMK20,000 (US$23.6) plus overtime pay.
