BANGLADESH: Garment export growth slows sharply
By Petah Marian | 14 June 2012
Continuing turmoil in the key markets of Europe and North America has led to a slowdown in Bangladeshi garment exports in the first 11 month of the current fiscal year.
Figures released by Bangladesh's Export Promotion Bureau showed earnings from garment exports grew around 8.62% to almost $17.27bn, between July 2011 and May this year. But this marks a sharp decline on the 44% jump in garment exports to $17.9bn in the year before.
Total exports from Bangladesh were up 7% to US$21.98bn in the 11-month period, but this is also considerably below the 20-40% growth recorded in recent years.
