Luxury goods maker Burberry has registered a 21 per cent year-on-year rise in pre-tax profit to £141.2 million for fiscal 2003.

The company, famous for its iconic gabardine raincoat, also reported a 13.8 per cent year-on-year increase in turnover to £675.8m for the 12-month period.

"This has been a terrific year for Burberry," CEO Rose Marie Bravo said.

"With a favourable response to date to our autumn-winter 2004 merchandise, we look ahead to the current financial year with confidence."

Earnings were boosted by new store openings in Houston, Las Vegas, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Melbourne during the year.
