• Net loss narrowed to $1.8m from $5.0m
  • Net sales rose 6.9% to $48.7m
  • Same-store sales were up 5.7%

Women's wear retailer Cache Inc has narrowed its third quarter loss after better design, sourcing and merchandising helped drive higher sales.

"During the quarter, our customers responded favorably to our fashion across categories," said chairman and CEO Thomas Reinckens. "This drove a 5.7% increase in comparable store sales and a 570 basis point expansion in gross margin.

"Importantly, we saw an improvement in top line results in September, as sales increased double digits during the five-week period, and overall we were pleased with our results, which represented a significant improvement over the prior year."

The New York based company, which operates a chain of 279 stores, says it is "optimistic" as it moves into the fourth quarter, "and believe we have identified the right strategies and compelling assortments to optimise the holiday season."
