• Sales in year to 26 June up 9.4%
  • Clothing sales in South Africa up 11.5%
  • Country Road posts double-digit comps decline

A double-digit surge in clothing sales in South Africa boosted full-year revenues for retailer Woolworths, despite a disappointing performance from Australian subsidiary Country Road.

Group sales rose 9.4% in the 12 months to 26 June, with comparable store sales up 6.3% – thanks in part to an 11.5% rise in South African clothing sales and a 9.4% comps increase.

But Woolworths said its Australian subsidiary, Country Road, had posted a 2% sales decline, with comps falling 10.9%, as the Australian retail sector continued to struggle.

The company is due to release its full results for the year on 25 August.
