Retail sales growth reached its highest rate for seven months in February as consumers across the UK continued to splash the cash in shops and stores, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) said on Tuesday.

Its latest figures show like-for-like retail sales were up 6.1 per cent in February from the year-ago period, slightly higher than the six per cent year-on-year climb recorded in December.

Warmer weather boosted sales of new Spring collections of women's clothing with many retailers reporting double-digit growth, the BRC revealed.

"This is good news for shoppers, retailers and the economy," said the BRC's director general, Bill Moyes. "Consumers continue to benefit from fierce price competition which is keeping high street inflation at very low levels."
