The impact of the BSE crisis on the leather industry was at the heart of the debates of the recent COTANCE Council meeting that took place in Brussels in February. The measures taken by the EU for eradicating the disease and regaining consumer confidence in red meat consumption present certain loopholes. The problems identified by the representatives concerned the consistency of precautionary measures taken by the Commission Regulation, with respect to the safe valorisation of bovine hides in leather production.
