As well as being a leading supplier to the global apparel industry, Turkey is also forging a reputation as a vibrant centre for both fashion design and consumption – fuelled in part by an economy that is on the crest of a financial and cultural wave.

Against this backdrop it is perhaps not surprising that Istanbul has been crowned this year’s European Capital of Culture – celebrating with an exciting programme of events that includes the recently launched Istanbul Fashion Week later this month.

Putting the country well and truly on the world’s fashion map, the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art is currently staging an exhibition by the British-based Turkish Cypriot fashion designer Hussein Chalayan. Open until the end of October, the event covers his work, including fashion collections, art and film projects created between 1994 and 2009.

The show is a joint effort between Istanbul Fashion Week 2010, Istanbul Moda Academy (IMA) and Design Museum, the Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporters’ Association (ITKIB), and Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency.

Twice named British Designer of the Year, Chalayan is renowned for his innovative use of materials. Highlights of the exhibition include furniture that transforms into a garment, a white dress consisting of over 15.000 flickering LED lights, a dress made of materials used in the aircraft industry which changes shape via remote control, and a dress that consists of over 200 moving lasers presenting an extraordinary spectacle of light.

Also reinforcing Turkey’s fashion credentials is Istanbul Fashion Week, which brings together the country’s leading fashion designers and apparel brands.

The event, also co-organised by ITKIB, aims to strengthen the country’s fashion, design and textile sector by promoting local designers and fashion brands to world markets, with fashion shows and the KOZA Young Fashion Designers’ Contest.

It runs alongside the Cpi (Collection Premiere Istanbul) trade fair for select Turkish, European and international fashion brands.

IFW will take place from 25-28 August at the ITU (Istanbul Technical University) Taskisla Campus.

Can Turkey make its mark on fashion?

Can Turkey make its mark as the next big thing in fashion? Not just as a producer - it already has this sewn up, with a dynamic industry that serves key markets in Europe, Russia and the Middle East, and is ranked the second biggest apparel supplier to the EU - but as a fashion centre in its own right, with its own designs, brands and collections.
