Apparel group Fast Retailing Co has reported same-store sales growth of 12.4 per cent year-on-year for December 2003, its first such double-digit gain in 29 months.

The Japanese company, which operates the Uniqlo casual clothing chain, attributed the increase to a promotional campaign which boosted sales of turtleneck sweaters and fleece jackets.

"The figure is a success for us," a Fast Retailing spokesman said.

"The comeback in the very important month of December is a positive sign."

In November 2003, the company suffered a 15.1 per cent year-on-year dip in same-store sales.
