Federated Department Stores Inc has posted a 6.9 per cent year-on-year rise in first quarter sales to $3.52 billion, largely due to improved sales of women's apparel.

The Cincinnati-based company, which posted a 4.6 per cent year-on-year decline in first quarter sales a year ago, also reported a 6.9 per cent increase in same-store sales for the period.

Federated is the parent company of retailers Lazarus-Macy's and Bloomingdale's.
