The head of Canada's largest sporting goods chain, Forzani, has said his firm will focus on exclusive apparel brands instead of other clothing lines due to fierce competition in the sector.

CEO Bob Sartor, whose company operates banners such as Sport Chek and Coast Mountain Sports, had earlier announced a 10 per cent rise in second quarter net profit to C$3.9 million from the year-ago period.

"It's competitive as hell out there, there's no doubt about that," he said, adding retail sales for the quarter ended August 3 climbed 7.5 per cent to C$262.7m from $244.3m in the same period of 2002.
