US retail giant Gap Inc is continuing its eight-year legal battle with South African firm Salt of the Earth Creations (SOTEC) over trademark rights in the country.

According to Reuters the company is appealing against a ruling that could prevent Gap from using its trademarks in South Africa, amid claims from SOTEC that it owns the Gap name but does not trade under it.

It was reported that South African retailer Stuttafords was ordered to halt sales of the Gap brand by the country's Pretoria High Court in May this year, a ruling in favour of SOTEC distributor Kingsgate.

Following this, Gap lodged an appeal and is reportedly allowed to continue trading through the chain until the appeal is completed.

Gap was not available for immediate comment when contacted by just-style this afternoon (24 October).
