Officials from Thailand's Commerce Ministry said on Monday they had reached a compromise with exporters over new regulations for allocating quotas to garment traders.

The changes will see 17 per cent - not the 25 per cent originally pus forward - of the basic quota earmarked to a central pool for allocation to new and small exporters.

Commerce minister Adisai Bodharamik said exporters who do not return the unused portion of their basic quota by July will have their allocation slashed.

He added he hopes the forfeited quota allocations will boost the pool to 30 per cent with quotas allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, every month.
