Indian exports of ready-made garments witnessed a 16 per cent decline in January 2001 in value terms at 22.5187bn rupees ($489.54m) as against 25.2254bn rupees ($548.38m) in the same month last year. According to the Apparel Export Promotion Council, the decrease in exports was mainly due to non-endorsement of outside-the-bilateral-agreement items, which declined by some 46 per cent.
