Fabrics and garments made using the fibre product polylactide (PLA), the raw material derived from the fermentation of simple plant sugars, can be labelled as such following its recognition by the European Community.

In line with the European Directive, labels can now indicate polylactide fibre content, such as that of the branded product Ingeo. Launched 18 months ago, Ingeo was the first manmade natural fibre made from a plant sugar polymer.

Textile products can only be sold within the European Community if they comply with the provisions of the Directive defined by the Commission of the European Communities.
