Apparel retailer Goody's Family Clothing Inc has reported a rise in third quarter profit to $1.7 million, after a loss of $3.1m in the same period last year.

The Tennessee-based company also posted sales of $280.8m for the period, an increase of 4.7 per cent from $268.3m recorded in third quarter 2002.

Comparable store sales, meanwhile, were up 3.4 per cent year-on-year for the quarter.

"I am pleased with the continuation of positive results through the third quarter and first nine months of fiscal 2003," CEO Robert Goodfriend said.

"As we enter the all important fourth quarter of fiscal 2003, we are cautiously optimistic that we can achieve our comparable store sales plan."
