The UK government has announced GBP2m (US$3.2m) of support for a new skills programme led by a consortium of employers and the Textile Centre of Excellence.

Creative Skillset, the skills council for entertainment media, advertising, publishing and fashion and textiles, said the move will improve the skills of people already working and develop the next generation of these industries.

The partnership also includes manufacturers from the textiles, technical textiles, apparel and textile services sectors, as well as trade associations.

"Company leaders have worked with sector bodies to create an ambitious and innovative new approach that will develop technical expertise and business acumen," said Creative Skillset.

The programme is part of the Employer Ownership Skills Pilot, which routes public investors directly to employers so they can design and deliver more flexible training packages. Employers are expected to provide co-funding.
