BRAZIL: Invista invests $100m in new spandex plant
By just-style.com | 25 May 2011
Fibre maker Invista is investing more than US$100m in a new Lycra production plant in Paulínia, São Paulo State, as it seeks to expand its business there and capitalise on expected growth in the region.
Construction for the project will begin immediately, with an expected opening in late 2012.
“Brazil is a growing and strategic market for our business,” said David Trerotola, president of Invista Apparel. “The expansion of our Lycra fibre production is a reflection of the growth of our customers.”
The US-headquartered company already has two production sites in Brazil. One in Americana produces Supplex fabric, and another in Paulínia where it makes Lycra fibre.
“Brazil’s textile market is very integrated, with textile mills, garment and fashion brands with high penetration in the country and the world,” Trerotola added. According to the Brazilian Association of Producers of Artificial and Synthetic Fibers (ABRAFAS), the country’s textile industry generates US$1.06bn in annual revenues.
The new spandex plant will be installed at the Paulínia site, and will generate around 1,000 jobs during the construction phase.
Separately on Tuesday (24 May), Invista said it had increased its investment in Ashburn Hill Corporation (AHC), a Georgia, US-based manufacturer of flame-resistant apparel for industrial and fire-fighting applications.
