UK: January sales rise at clothing retailers

UK textile, clothing and footwear sales volumes increased by 0.5% during January, according to statistics released today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Over the month, sales values increased by 3.6%, with an estimated GBP2.8bn (US$4.4bn) spent in the sector, the ONS said today (20 February).

It added that textiles, clothing and footwear stores was the only sector to record an acceleration in annual price growth from 2% in December to 2.9% in January.

Total retail sale values recorded a 4.4% increase on a year-on-year basis, with sales volumes driven primarily by non-store retailing, other stores and food stores. Total sales were up 0.9% when compared with December 2011.
