JJB Sports has refused to comment on a press report it is lining up a bid for loss-making footwear chain Qube.

The sporting goods retailer, which last month said it was shutting 72 stores with the loss of 800 jobs, is keen to add Qube to recent acquisition Original Shoe Company according to the Manchester Evening News.

The retailer, which also reported a 71.9% slump in annual pre-tax profit to GBP10.8m (US$21.1m) last month, is to re-badge seven of its closing stores under the Original Shoe Company fascia.

According to the newspaper report, Qube has 26 stores on the UK high street, and is run by Scottish entrepreneur Sir Tom Hunter - who also owns the Office and USC chains.

"The company does not comment on press speculation," a spokesperson for JJB told just-style.
