UK: John Lewis' fashion sales soar in cold weather

UK department store retailer John Lewis said its current Christmas revenues are being led by fashion items.

"Amongst the directorates fashion is in the lead at +19% week to date as the colder weather is driving purchases in this area," Nat Wakely, director of Selling Operations for John Lewis said in a trading update.

It also said that the current UK cold weather has seen customers buy a pair of its GBP18 gloves every two minutes, with ladies denier tights selling at a rate of one pair every minute.

Wakely added: "Mid way through the week we are +12% on last year and 19% up on last week. We continue to build nicely on an excellent week last week and all branches bar one are showing increases, demonstrating a good spread of positive results around the country."
