INDIA: Launches five-year technical textiles plan

By | 21 January 2011

The Indian government is to invest INR2bn (US$43.8m) in a five-year project to boost the country’s technical textiles industry, including four new centres of excellence for specialty materials.

The so-called Technology Mission will run until 2015, and split into two phases.

The first will tackle the sector’s shortfalls by looking at specifications and standards, and setting up internationally-accredited testing facilities.

There will also be an investment of INR250m in each of the four centres of excellence. These will focus on the nonwovens, composites, indutech sectors, as well as the sportech segment which includes technical textile products such as shoes and sports equipment used in sports and leisure.

The second phase will help develop domestic and export markets for local technical textiles firms.

Sectors: Fibres & fabrics
