Leather exports from India have seen rapid growth between April 2000 and January 2001 rising more than 28 per cent to 75bn rupees ($1.6bn) and are predicted to reach around 90bn rupees ($1.9bn) for the full year. According to sources within the Union Commerce Ministry, the majority of exports, 19 per cent, went to the US, while Germany, the UK, Italy and France all emerged as key markets for the exporters, taking a combined total of around 63 per cent of total exports.
