The Zambian Government is hoping to improve the competitiveness of the domestic leather industry in the Comesa Free Trade Area (FTA). Commerce, Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Jazzman Chikwakwa said in an interview to the Times of Zambia that the Government was committed to ensuring that the local leather industry became more competitive in relation within the Comesa FTA. He said the local footwear industry in particular was facing a number of problems posed by cheap imports that constantly threatened its survival.
