UK: London 2012 uniforms to contain recycled materials

Sportswear giant Adidas is doing its bit to uphold the sustainability stance of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by ensuring that all outfits worn by around 70,000 volunteers at the event will contain recycled content.
"As part of our environmental strategy we are contributing to making London 2012 the sustainable games,” explains chief executive Herbert Hainer. “All 1.5m products which we will be providing to the volunteers will contain sustainable components.”
He also estimates that around 70% of all products supplied by Adidas for the Olympic Games will incorporate recycled or renewable materials, including buttons, recycled polyesters, organic cottons.
Which is no mean feat considering the German company, which is the games’ official sportswear sponsor, will not only be kitting out volunteers at all venues, but all clothing carrying the official games logo and outfits for Team GB.
There are also plans for a special shoe to be made too. “The volunteers’ shoe is an entirely recycled product,” Erica Kerner, Adidas global Olympic director, told journalists at a special briefing on Friday (27 May).
