Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova is to serve as the face of clothing and footwear company Cole Haan's spring advertising campaign, the company has said.

Nike-owned Cole Haan's spring 2009 campaign was shot in Malibu, California, by lifestyle photographer Martyn Thompson.

The company said it would reflect "the interplay of style and sport, passion and play, that Cole Haan and Sharapova share".

"The campaign marks the first time Cole Haan has collaborated with a Nike athlete to serve as the face of a new collection," said Cole Haan chief marketing officer Michael Capiraso.

"We are able to leverage her interest in fashion and sport, while connecting with our customer in a new and unique way."

Digital media will play an important role in the campaign, which makes its debut in the March issue of Vanity Fair and will appear in a number of top US women's magazines.
