Major retailer May Department Stores Co on Friday announced a deal to buy tuxedo rental and sales retailer Desmonds Formalwear for an undisclosed cash sum.

The St Louis-based operator of 448 department stores said it will run the Desmond stores as part of its After Hours Formalwear unit within May's Bridal Group, which includes David's Bridal, After Hours Formalwear, and Priscilla of Boston.

It added Desmonds is one of the leading tuxedo rental and sales retailers in the Midwest, operating 66 stores in 10 states, with annual sales of about $20 million.

"Desmonds represents an important expansion of our tuxedo rental and sales business, moving our market reach west of the Mississippi River for the first time," said Gene Kahn, May's chairman and CEO.

"Together with the David's Bridal stores already located in Desmonds' markets, we are positioned to reach even more engaged couples and better serve their wedding apparel needs.

”Through our Bridal Group businesses and our department store wedding registries, we continue to build one of the most integrated bridal businesses in the nation."

He added John Desmond, owner and operator of Desmonds, will serve as a consultant to the Bridal Group.
