Men's Wearhouse (Nasdaq:MENS) today said that consolidated sales (excluding sales from its closed C&R stores, US based Moores stores and Suitmax stores) for the five and twenty two weeks ended July 1, 2000 increased 16.5 per cent and 13.5 per cent, respectively, over the prior comparable periods.

Including sales from those closed stores, reported consolidated sales for the five and twenty two weeks ended July 1, 2000 increased 15.3 per cent to $116.9 million (versus $101.4 million in the prior comparable period) and 12.0 per cent to $505.2 million (versus $451.0 million in the prior comparable period), respectively.

Comparable U.S. store sales for the five weeks ended July 1, 2000 increased 6.9 per cent versus an 8.9 per cent increase for the five weeks ended July 3, 1999. Year to date 2000 comparable store sales increased 5.5 per cent compared with an increase of 6.8 per cent for year to date 1999.

The company's comparable Canadian (Moores Clothing for Men) store sales for the five weeks ended July 2, 2000 increased 22.4 per cent versus a 1.0 per cent increase in the five weeks ended July 4, 1999. Year to date comparable store sales for the twenty two weeks ended July 2, 2000 increased 4.1 per cent compared with a decrease of 4.4 per cent for the year to date 1999.

"In addition to opening one new Men's Wearhouse store during the month, we acquired a single store in Atlanta, Georgia under the name of K&G Ladies from a small private investor group on May 24, 2000," said David Edwab, president of The Men's Wearhouse. "The K&G Ladies store will be renamed K&G Women's Superstore and operated under the K&G group of stores. We expect to open two to three additional stores under that banner in the Atlanta market during the current year. Further openings beyond the Atlanta market will be dependent on results of these stores," he added.
