Fashion chain Monsoon on Monday posted a 32 per cent jump in full-year pre-tax profits to £32.1 million from £24.3 million in the year-ago period thanks to soaring sales and new store openings.

The operator of 256 Monsoon and Accessorize stores in the UK and Ireland said sales climbed 18 per cent to £203.6m and same-store sales surged 12 per cent. Net profit soared to £22.6m from £16.2m in 2001.

The company, which also boasts around 70 franchised or licensed stores overseas, said flip-flop sales doubled in the 12 months to May 25, while strong sales growth was also recorded in casual daywear and evening fashions.

Commenting on the results, Monsoon chairman Peter Simon, said: "I’m delighted to be able to report a year of record profits for Monsoon. The actions taken to strengthen our business and product offering are delivering results and building on the potential of the Accessorize and Monsoon brands in the UK and internationally.

"We face the current year with optimism and are confident that, with a clear focused strategy, we can continue to perform well and have another strong year."
