Clothing retailer New Look is to relocate its distribution operation to North Staffordshire, creating in excess of 300 new jobs.

The high-street chain will open the purpose-built centre at Lymedale Business Park in September, after deciding it needed to be nearer to its main pool of stores in the Midlands.

The company's distribution operations were previously based in Weymouth and Doncaster.

The Sentinel newspaper quoted chief executive of New Look, Phil Wrigley, as saying:  "The decision to move the distribution operations out of Weymouth and Doncaster was not taken lightly.

"Our distribution centre workforce is highly skilled, efficient and adaptable and we will be doing everything we can to help staff with the possibility of relocating to Newcastle or finding new jobs locally."

New Look decided that only one distribution centre was now needed after a review of its infrastructure. The company's head office will remain in Weymouth, however.

New Look has over 500 stores in Great Britain, plus around 191 in France.
