CAMBODIA: Nike calls for investigation into latest faintings

By | 13 April 2012

Sportswear giant Nike has asked the International Labour Organisation to investigate two mass fainting incidents at its Cambodian supplier Sabrina (Cambodia) Manufacturing last week and report on its findings.

A spokesperson for Nike told just-style it has asked ILO Better Factories Cambodia to include this incident in its current research into the causes behind a spate of mass faintings in the country.

"Given the recent history of mass faintings in Cambodia we have asked Better Factories Cambodia to extend their research in this area to the current incident," the spokesperson said.

It expects to receive Better Factories Cambodia's report next week.

According to a report in the Phnom Penh Post, the workers' rights group is preparing to implement an advocacy plan to tackle the causes of faintings at factories. It said poor communication between workers and management was one of several common threads in the fainting incidents, which had no single cause.

The campaign will include comedy themed television programming that would show life on the factory floor, and the distribution of nutrition calendars for workers, developed by workers. "The comedy will present messages on how to avoid fainting to workers and the wider public," said Better Factories consultant Maeve Galvin.

The campaign will include incentives for factories and workers.
