Bulgarian customs chiefs and shoe industry leaders have agreed to launch a high-profile crackdown against illegal footwear imports following a top-level meeting in Sofia over the weekend.

Shoe producers claim up to nine million pairs of shoes a year find their way into the Bulgarian marketplace which has had a devastating impact on local shoe makers whose annual output has plunged to 500,000 pairs.

They have now handed customs investigators a list with the market prices of footwear to help them uncover the illegal practice.
