Although naysayers claim lack of innovation, tough competition and sales slumps in many sports sectors have put a crimp on the sporting goods industry, others believe the industry is primed for growth, particularly in the outdoors segment. And the figures agree: this past holiday season, sales in the outdoor industry grew 19 per cent over 1999, according to the Top-line retail report from ORCA, the industry trade association for the $17bn outdoors segment.
